COD unveils newly expanded Library Media Lab
A newly expanded Library Media Lab at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn provides students with access to the digital production equipment necessary to remain competitive in the evolving technology-based workforce.
The 1,200-square-foot space features state-of-the-art equipment, including audio recording booths, a video and photography production studio, creative digital workstations, and video/audio recording equipment for use in-house or for check out.
"There is a difference between being a digital consumer and a digital producer. More and more students today are producing, both in the classroom and in their everyday lives," said Jennifer McIntosh, College of DuPage library associate dean, during a recent ribbon-cutting event.
"Creating in different modality can be more engaging. By giving students greater access to the necessary tools that help them with class projects, they are better prepared for post-college careers, as employers want people with these skills," she said.
The library's first media lab opened in 2015 in a significantly smaller space and with limited hours and resources.
While the college features a number of program-specific labs, students across multiple disciplines use technology in projects and presentations, increasing the need for access to creative software programs and equipment, she said.
"We're providing our students a controlled environment in which they can create video presentations, record voice-overs or craft digital designs with immediate assistance from lab staff," McIntosh said.
College of DuPage Interim President Dr. Brian Caputo applauded McIntosh and her staff for their dedication to student success, citing the ever-evolving nature of technology and its growing presence in higher education.
"It is the mission of College of DuPage to be a center for teaching and learning, and we have a passion for student success," he said.
"This is a state-of-the-art facility where you can create a multitude of projects and presentations with excellent support behind it. This space will prepare students well for the future."
Reflecting on technology's quick evolution since his time as a media production student at the Technology Center of DuPage, COD Board Chairman Frank Napolitano stressed the need for more technology in higher education.
"Think about what is in our homes currently and how technology has advanced in the past five, even 10 years," he said.
"The industry has come so far, and we must constantly improve to give our students the skills they need to be successful. This lab is a wonderful addition to the college and a testament to COD's dedication to providing our students the tools they will need as they complete their studies and seek employment in a growing digital world."
