'Salute to Vienna New Year's Concert' comes to Symphony Center Dec. 30

Usher in the New Year with the dazzling spectacle of "Salute to Vienna New Year's Concert" at Orchestra Hall in the Symphony Center in downtown Chicago.

This concert, celebrating 24 years in North America, is a crystalline moment of timeless beauty.

Inspired by the annual Viennese "Neujahrskonzert", this frothy celebration blends acclaimed European singers and dancers with a full orchestra in a fresh new program each year. Step into Vienna's golden age and spend the evening caught up in the joy, grandeur, and music of a time past but not forgotten.

On Sunday, Dec. 30, join Viennese conductor Oliver Ostermann and The Strauss Symphony of America featuring the Chicago Philharmonic, who will perform with Viennese soprano Beate Ritter, and tenor Brian Cheney from New York City.

Performing during the concert will be members of the Kiev-Aniko Ballet of Ukraine. The ballet, established in 1997, is the first professional ballet troupe that performs contemporary choreography in Ukraine. The company is led by artistic director, choreographer, and People's Artist of Ukraine, Professor Aniko Rekhviashvili. Her choreography is deeply charged with beauty, emotion, the energy of self-expression, and a high level of dance skills which combine in active harmony with the music. From its first performance, the Kiev-Aniko Ballet has been a reputable company throughout the world. It has toured throughout Europe, including the United Kingdom, Russia, Georgia, Estonia, Poland, Turkey, Serbia, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Italy, and Spain, as well as in Canada and the United States.

The concert also features international champion ballroom dancers. These professional ballroom dancers are hand-picked from various ballroom dance companies in Europe, primarily the S(Z)ilver Dance Company, based in Szentes, Hungary. The company is known for producing several of the most successful European dancers who are competing today. Many of the dancers who perform in "Salute to Vienna" have won medals in international competitions.

Conductor Oliver Ostermann studied singing, piano, composition, and conducting at the Vienna Conservatory. He served as musical director at Bühne Baden, has appeared as a guest conductor with European opera houses and orchestras including the Vienna Volksoper, Hofer Symphoniker, Graz Opera, and with Canadian symphonies in Calgary and Edmonton.

Audiences young and old will be carried away by the first notes of the eternal "Blue Danube Waltz."

The concert takes place at 2:30 p.m. in Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave. in Chicago.
