The Big Freeze at Sedgebrook

There's a big freeze in Lincolnshire … a Fitness Freeze to be exact. The annual program, developed by Ruth Reyna, wellness center manager at Sedgebrook is a way to encourage residents of the senior living community to stay active during the busy holiday season. The wellness center is operated by the National Institution of Fitness and Sports (NIFS).

"We decorate the fitness center with paper snowflakes. Every resident who works out or attends classes at least three times each week for more than 10 minutes, gets a snowflake with their name on it," said Reyna.

Citing the residents' strong competitive spirit, she said the program is extremely popular.

"At the end of the program, we send thank you notes with the personalized snowflakes to each participant."

Reyna said that there's an average of 60 residents visiting the fitness center every day, divided between classes, fitness equipment and the pool.

"Our goal with the Fitness Freeze is to have 1,900 visits during the month of December. People sometimes slow down during the month because of the holidays. We're hoping to keep the numbers high," she said.

Ideally, she added, the participants will keep their workouts as part of their routines moving into the new year.

"We do everything we can to encourage the residents to stay fit and healthy so that they have the chance to enjoy the retirement they've worked so hard for."
