ESO to highlight Beethoven, Strauss and Wagner in Nov. 3 and 4 'Titans' concerts

Beethoven, Strauss and Wagner, three of the greatest German composers of all time, are featured in Elgin Symphony Orchestra's "Titans" concerts this weekend.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3-4, at the Hemmens, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin.

The concerts will be led by Music Director Andrew Grams. Soprano Laura Wilde, a graduate of the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, will perform Strauss's "Vier Letzte Lieder" or "Four Last Songs," a poignant look at life written when the composer was 84 years old.

The concerts open with Beethoven's Overture to Fidelio, his first and only attempt at an opera, and excerpts from Wagner's "The Ring," the pinnacle of the art form.

Saturday concertgoers are invited after the performance to Mingle with the Musicians at Bennigan's Elgin. Concert sponsors are Grand Victoria Foundation and Otto Engineering Inc.

Tickets start at $30. Student tickets are $10. Valet and free parking are available.
