Learn how to spot fake news

In an era of fake news, how do you discern what information is factual?

In a series of free classes, Daily Herald editors and District 214 journalism teachers will educate you on how to identify lies, spin and bias that masquerade as news.

Learn how words, photos, audio recordings and even video can be faked, and why reputable journalists don't do so. Hear how a news organization operates, and pretend you're the editor weighing the day's news.

The fall 2018 classes include:

• Facts Matter: What is Bias?: 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26.

• Facts Matter: How to Spot Fake News: 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3

• Facts Matter: How Well Can You Trust Photos & Videos?: 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10.

• Facts Matter: How Does a News Organization Work?: 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17.

• Facts Matter: The First Amendment as a Protector of Democracy: 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24.

All classes will be held in the Theater in the Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road in Arlington Heights. Registration for each class is required.
