Lombard plans to upgrade traffic signals at 11 intersections

Lombard plans to upgrade traffic signals at 11 intersections this fall as part of its traffic signal modernization program.

Work is scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 13, and will take place primarily along Westmore-Meyers Road and 22nd Street. Officials say the new LED traffic signals are more durable, longer lasting, more energy efficient, and more visible to motorists.

Temporary lane closures may be required and motorists are asked to be cautious around workers and to follow signs when posted.

The improvements are part of a program that includes 24 signalized intersections throughout the village. The improved locations feature updated pedestrian signals, push buttons that are easier to use and countdown timers.

Officials say they also are more resilient due to battery backup systems that continue to operate even when electrical power is lost.

Signals that already have been ungraded are along St. Charles Road and Main Street, including locations in downtown, near Glenbard East High School and near Glenn Westlake Middle School.

The program is in conjunction with the village's bicycle and pedestrian master plan.
