Glenbard series welcomes award-winning author

The author of the critically acclaimed book about the Vietnam War, "The Things They Carried," will speak later this month at Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn.

Tim O'Brien, a National Book award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist, will discuss his work at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the school, 670 Crescent Blvd., as part of the Glenbard Parent Series: Navigating Healthy Families.

The group selected O'Brien's book as its 2018 Community-Wide Read. The free program is open to everyone.

O'Brien's book features a collection of linked short stories inspired by his experiences in Vietnam.

It has become a staple for high school students across the country and includes aspects of memoir, novel and short story. It displays intense sensitivity and insight into courage and fear and prompts questions about how subsequent generations will view the war.
