Mundelein HS newspaper staff scores International First Place Award

Submitted by Mundelein High School District 120

The 2017-18 Mustang newspaper staff received the International First Place Award in the 2018 Quill and Scroll News Media Evaluation contest.

The award is presented to a publication that "has received at least one 'Superior' and at least one 'Excellent' rating in the four or five areas for evaluation, with the other areas rated 'Good.'"

"I see all the raw material for a fine newsmagazine here," a judge wrote in his feedback to the staff. "The writers have obvious command of their language. Photographers can produce great images. The pages are organized. You have the foundation of a solid publication here."

Much of the judge's feedback focused on the staff's March 2018 issue.

"The staff took a lot of pride in putting together the March issue and thought the final product was some of the best work produced that year," The Mustang Adviser Michelle Didzbalis said. "I'm glad they were able to see the benefits of working hard to produce a quality product for their community."

Last year's editorial staff, led by Editor-in-Chief Gianna Scibetta, '18, included current Editors-in-Chief Madison Parola, '19, and Tyler Yakimisky, '19, as well as Maggie O'Donnell, '19; Kylie Carrier, '20; Alexis Naddy, '20; Carson Beck, '18 and Jonathan Martin, '18.

Quill and Scroll has been in existence for 92 years with the mission of "honoring the best work done by student journalists around the world. (It) provide(s) students and their advisers with resources to do great work and to have it evaluated."
