Terry Dunning to receive Elgin Cosmopolitan Club Distinguished Service Award

Terry Dunning has been chosen as the recipient of the 76th Elgin Cosmopolitan Club Distinguished Service Award based on his outstanding contributions to the community.

A dinner will be held in his honor on Tuesday, May 22, at the Elgin Country Club on Weld Road in Elgin.

Dunning has been a long time community leader throughout his career and into his retirement years. He has led boards and committees at his church, the chamber of commerce, First Community Bank, Advocate Sherman Hospital, and other Elgin institutions.

He has been a "friend" to local social service agencies and others as he has used his leadership skills and auctioneering talents to assist in fundraising. He is well known for his role as auctioneer and appraiser for his family's business, Dunning's Auction Service, which dates back to 1896.

Some of his key contributions to the community include serving as president of the National Auctioneers Association 1975-76 and being named to the National Auctioneers Association in 1981; being on the Illinois Auction advisory board 2000-2011; and serving as board chairman of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce in 1994.

He also has served on the Sherman Hospital board of directors. His leadership skills helped guide the board and staff through the historic move. He continues as a volunteer at the hospital today.

Dunning also has been the president of Elgin Noon Rotary Club, 1986-87; a board member of First Community Bank through 2016; and a lay leader at First United Methodist Church in Elgin.

He has contributed his time at many charity auctions, including: the Community Crisis Center gala auction; Centro de Informacion annual auction; and the Elgin Community Colleges Pearl Gala (30th anniversary).

Dunning and his wife, Pat, have been very generous community members and donors of the United Way of Elgin, Ecker Mental Health Center, Elgin Community College and ECC Foundation, Gail Borden Library Foundation and many other Elgin and Fox Valley organizations.
