Church Women United of Des Plaines Donations Benefit Three Local Groups

Church Women United (CWU) of Des Plaines presented three local charitable organizations with donations of $275 each at the observance of World Community Day, held Nov. 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Plaines.

Recipients include The Harbour, which serves homeless teens; Northwest Suburban Daycare, which provides daycare to children of low income families ; and the Self-Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines, which supplies food and clothing to residents in need.

CWU is a national volunteer-based Christian movement that works toward social justice and empowerment of women globally. Its constituents represent a broad spectrum of Christian tradition including racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and age diversity and 26 denominations.

CWU of Des Plaines traces its history to a time when migrant workers picked onions on land that eventually became the site of Kmart, at Lee and Oakton streets. CWU volunteers helped teach English to families of migrant workers at that time.

CWU of Des Plaines gathers to celebrate World Day of Prayer on the first Friday in March. May Friendship Day is celebrated on the first Friday in May and will center on Gratitude in 2018. World Community Day is observed on the first Friday in November and will focus on Harmony in 2018.

All women of the church are welcome to join CWU of Des Plaines. For details contact Marilyn Hugh, 847/299-1658.
