Glass walls, bright lights, and everything you need to make, create, imagine and build. This is Workshop, a special area in the Schaumburg Library.

Constructed during last year's first-floor renovation, Workshop is a place where you can get messy … or not. You can make something beautiful or interesting to give a friend, a loved one, or yourself. There are project suggestions and free materials that can mesh with your own imagination for a one-of-a-kind result. Or, you can just come and have fun.

Workshop is used for music, movies, and special Saturday activities that take place weekly from 1-3 p.m. All of the Saturday projects and events are open to all ages, so bring the kids, a friend, grandma or the neighbor and see what's happening in Workshop.

Get ready for autumn by creating a leaf garland Saturday, Aug. 26. A variety of materials and instructions will be provided. If you're a fan of Doctor Who, don't miss Doctor Who Comics Day Sept. 2. Come and make Doctor Who-themed crafts, including bookmarks, perception filter key necklaces and psychic paper.

Decorate your home for autumn or Halloween by making a patterned pumpkin Sept. 16. Autumn-themed paper, sewing patterns and a variety of embellishments will be available for creating something unique.

On Sept. 23, gather the family, or even a few friends, for Family Board Gaming. Yahtzee, Sorry, Chutes and Ladders, Trouble and other classic board games will be available.

Have you ever tried blackout poetry? Come to Workshop and discover this fun way of getting creative with words. Blackout words on the pages of discarded books to create your own poetry. Book pages will be provided.

Many more activities will be coming to Workshop, so remember to check the listings in the Library Guide that is mailed to Schaumburg Township residents. The Guide may also be picked up at any of the three library locations in Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates or Hanover Park, or accessed online at

In addition to the Workshop activities, the Guide lists all of the upcoming Schaumburg Library programs, classes, concerts, movies, and special events for every age group.
