White Sox decline Hendriks' $15 million option; Clevinger declines mutual option

In an expected move, the White Sox are declining Liam Hendriks' $15 million option for next season.

Pitcher Mike Clevinger declined his $12 million mutual option while outfielders Clint Frazier and Trayce Thompson were outrighted to Class AAA Charlotte. With the moves, the team's 40-man roster decreased to 36.

Hendriks is still going to get paid. The all-star closer's contract features an unusual $15 million buyout. Over the next 10 years, he'll receive annual installments of $1.5 million.

After coming back from Stage 4 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in late May, Hendriks pitched in 5 games for the Sox before injuring his right elbow. He had Tommy John surgery in August and is expected to miss most or all of next season.

Hendriks was second in the American League with 37 saves in 2022 and first in 2021 with 38 saves.
