The cardiac kids of Des Plaines did it again.
For the third time this season, Maine West was able to make a huge play in the closing minutes as the Warriors held off Highland Park 20-19 Friday night in Des Plaines.
Maine West's Maks Makota made a two-point conversion tackle on a wide receiver quick screen with 1:44 to play to keep his team in front 20-19. David Diaz then lassoed the ensuing onside kick and the Warriors 5-0, 2-0) picked up the victory.
It was the third time this season that Maine West won near the end of the game. The Warriors beat Marmion on a touchdown in the closing second 14-13. Maine West also beat Schaumburg 12-6 on a touchdown on the final play in regulation.
Onell Miller-Smith rushed for a pair of touchdowns and Tommy Delaney and Tommy Delaney added another. Kyle Ramirez led the Warriors defense with an interception and a fumble recovery.
Maine South 50, New Trier 3:
The Hawks (4-1, 1-0) opened with a halfback reverse option pass from Michael Dellumo to Doug Sernel that covered 80 yards and never looked back.
Constantine Coines tossed three touchdown passes to Evan Agosto. Coines also threw a touchdown pass to Dellumo. Jack Van Roeyen had an interception return for another touchdown and Clark Simpson also had an interception for the Hawks.
Brother Rice 54, St. Viator 7:
St. Viator (3-2) had its three-game winning streak broken in Beverly against CCL/ESCC Blue opponent Brother Rice. The Lions trailed 14-7 in the second quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Peter LaFleur. Brother Rice (3-2) then pulled away thanks to a long run, a pick-six and a punt return.
Conant 16, Schaumburg 12:
With 1:20 to play and trailing 12-9, Cooper Hanson had a 29-yard touchdown run to put Conant (3-2, 0-1) in front.
Schaumburg then moved the ball into Conant territory, but Connor Minogue had an interception for the Cougars. Conant was able to get a first down and run out the clock.
Hanson also had a 12-yard touchdown run earlier and the Cougars also scored on a safety. Marcus Stewart had a four-yard touchdown run and Lucas Wagener had a one-yard scoring run for Schaumburg (2-3, 0-1).
Mt. Carmel 37, Carmel 16:
The Carmelite bowl went to the City team as Mt. Carmel (5-0) handed Carmel (4-1) its first loss. Carmel led 16-14 in the third quarter on a 40-yard field goal by Ashton Lutz and pair of touchdown passes from Johnny Weber (18-30, 199 yards). Weber threw a 13-yard scoring pass to Torey French and a 27-yard pass to Kai Owens. But Mt. Carmel erupted for three consecutive touchdowns to win.
Libertyville 40, Waukegan 22:
With the game tied at 14-14, Quinn Schambow threw a touchdown pass to Josh Holst for Libertyville (3-2, 1-2) to open the floodgates. Schambow threw another touchdown pass to Holst. Schambow, who would have five touchdown passes, then tossed a 65-yard pass to Stevan Garbic just before the half. Schambow would continue his onslaught throwing 40 yards to Sam Seth and then a 30-yard pass to Garvic as the Wildcats would pull away.
Vernon Hills 24, Maine East 6:
Louis Gatta had a 51-yard touchdown run and Holden Smith scored from the one for Vernon Hills (2-3, 1-0).
North Chicago 23, Lakes 15:
Dominick Lostroscio had a 60-yard kickoff return and Rondelle Griffin scored on a 1-yard run but Lakes (1-4, 0-2) fell in Lake Villa.
Elk Grove 35, Wheeling 6:
Daniel Pasterski threw three touchdown passes for Elk Grove (2-3, 1-0). Pasterski threw a pair of 2-yard scoring passes to Nate Gobert and a 51-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Tanner. Jeremiah Pickett had a 2-yard touchdown run. Dominick Belmont had a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown for the Grenadiers. Justin Ghibea had a 5-yard touchdown pass to Christopher Guzman for Wheeling (1-4, 0-1).
Grant 55, Round Lake 0:
Tyler Zdon rushed for four touchdowns for the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-1). Zdon had touchdown runs of 10, 25, 20 and 22 yards. Rylan Art had a 1-yard scoring run while Matthew Gipson threw a touchdown pass to Max Hembrey. Ethan Wiley added a 41-yard touchdown run.
