Both Prospect girls and boys teams excel at Mid Suburban League indoor track championship

Scout Storms was on the lookout for a conference record.

The Barrington sophomore was able to more than locate one Saturday at the Mid Suburban League Boys and Girls indoor track championship at North Central College in Naperville.

Storms won the 1,600 in a record time of 4:56.41. She held off Meg Peterson of Prospect, who finished in 4:56.52 and Hersey's Anna Harden who was third with a 4:57.23.

All three broke the conference record of 4:59.00 set by Christina Santiago in 2014.

"It was super fun and awesome atmosphere for the race," Storms said. "My ears were buzzing the while time with my teammates on the side."

Harden picked up a conference record that would stand in the 3,200. Harden, who is a senior, won in 10:55.23.

"It was fun," Harden said. "I was just trying to run even splits and stay relaxed."

The Prospect girls won the conference title with 144.5. Barrington was second with a 79.5 and Hersey third with a 63.5.

The Knights were led by Kaitlin Skelton, who won the 400 in 1:01.99, Lily Ginsberg who won the 800 in 2:14.41, Charlotte Daines, who won the high jump with 5.43 meters. The Knights also won two relays.

"We tell our girls that our goal is to put the best team out there," Prospect coach Peter Wintermute said. "And they showed up today."

Conant's Daisha Brunson won the 55 sprint in 7.22 seconds, the 55 hurdles in 8.34 seconds and the 200 in 25.29. Schaumburg's Kaylee Meyer won the high jump in 1.62 meters while teammate Antenise Williams won the shot put in 12.78 meters. Sofia Rosenzweig won the triple jump in 10.86 meters and Rolling Meadows' Melina Moreno won the pole vault in 3.43 meters.

The Prospect boys' team also came up with a conference title. That despite missing Aidan Orlando, who did not run because of an injury. They also suffered a huge loss when Dominik Balenda, who has the top indoor time in the state, pulled up during the race and did not finish.

Prospect led Schaumburg by just two points heading into the 200 relay, which was the final race. The Knights clinched the meet title thanks a convincing win in 1:34.13.

Prospect finished with 117 points. Schaumburg was second with 105 points and Hersey was third with 79 points

"It was nice having this relay team in our back pocket," Prospect boys' coach Jay Renault said. "We had a lot of guys step up."

Luke Holtmeier, who won the triple jump (12.94 meters) and long jump (6.36 meters). Teammate Jaylen Calhoun won the high jump (1.85 meters). The Knights also won the 400 relay.

"Not as good as I like in the long jump," Calhoun said. "But I got the job done."

Schaumburg's Alex Valencia won the 400 in 51.59. He finished just ahead of teammate Omarion Jones, who had earlier won the 55 sprint in 6.60 seconds. Esad Sengun won the pole vault with 4.34 meters.

Hersey was powered by the top two finish in the shot put. Will Nolan won the event with a throw of 16.75 while Logan Farrell was second with a throw of 15.0 meters.

Hoffman Estates' Giovanny Hernandez won the 55 hurdles in 8.12 seconds. Conant's Gaven Coprin won the 800 in 2:03.26, Fremd's Theodore Cunningham won the 1,600 in 4:22.11 and Buffalo Grove's Mario Torres won the 3,200 in 9:22.39.
