Barrington downs Dundee-Crown to win Jacobs regional

It was a good news, bad news night for Dundee-Crown.

Good news: The Chargers scored the first basket of the game.

Bad news: Barrington scored the next 11 points.

The top-ranked Fillies used that run to cruise to a 54-20 win over fourth seeded Dundee-Crown to win the championship of the Jacobs Class 4A regional Thursday night in Algonquin.

Barrington (24-8) played its first game without standout Sophie Swanson, who tore her ACL in Monday night's win over Jacobs.

"You don't replace a player like Sophie Swanson," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "She is one of the best players ever at Barrington. It is a big blow. We had kids step up and respond. We played very good defense."

Monica Sierzputowksi hit a 10-footer in the lane to give the Chargers (9-22) a short lived 2-0 lead.

With Molly O'Riordan scoring 5 points including a 3-pointer and 4 points from Gwen Adler the Fillies had an 11-2 lead with 5:11 left in the first quarter.

Barrington iced the game by ending the first 8 minutes on a 10-2 run. The Fillies led 21-4 heading in the second quarter.

Adler paced the regional champs with 13 points and 8 rebounds. O' Riordan added 11 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocked shots.

"We have to learn to play without Sophie," said O'Riordan. "We did a good job of sharing the ball."

Sierzputowski led D-C with 9 points.

"Barrington is an outstanding team that is fundamentally sound," said coach John Gonnella. "I enjoyed my first year. I am looking forward to next season."
