Cubs acquire Mastrobuoni in trade with Rays
The Cubs added a depth piece Tuesday, acquiring Miles Mastrobuoni in a trade from Tampa Bay.
Minor-league pitcher Alfredo Zarraga goes from the Cubs to the Rays in the deal.
Rated by Baseball America as Tampa Bay's No. 20 prospect, the 27-year-old Mastrobuoni made his major-league debut this season and was 3-for-16 in eight games with the Rays.
Capable of playing all over the infield and outfield, Mastrobuoni spent most of the year with Class AAA Durham and hit .300/.377/.469 with 32 doubles, 16 home runs and 64 RBI and 23 stolen bases in 129 games.
Tampa Bay's 14th-round draft pick in 2016 out of Nevada-Reno, Mastrobuoni slashed .286/.367/.395 over six minor-league seasons.
Zarraga made 17 relief appearances for low Class A Myrtle Beach and high A South Bend this season and was 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA.
Other roster moves:
The Cubs added four players to their 40-man roster before Tuesday's Rule 5 protection deadline: outfielders Brennen Davis and Kevin Alcantara and right-handed pitchers Ben Brown and Ryan Jensen.
Davis, a 23-year-old outfielder, hit .192/.322/.319 with 4 home runs and 13 RBI in 43 games with Class AAA Iowa this season while dealing with a lingering back issue.
Alcantara, a 20-year-old outfielder, hit .273/.360/.451 with 15 homers and 85 RBI over 112 games with Myrtle Beach.
Acquired from the Phillies in an Aug. 2 trade for reliever David Robertson, Brown was 3-0 with a 4.06 ERA in 7 starts with Class AA Tennessee.
Jensen was 2-4 with a 4.25 ERA in 17 starts for Tennessee this year.
