Boys golf: Marmion wins regional behind Konen's 71

Sophomore Regan Konen fired a 1-under par 71 at Whisper Creek on Wednesday in Huntley to lead Marmion to the Class 2A Burlington Central regional crown.

Teammates Dominic Howard (80), Clay Ellis-Escobar (81) and Evan Paganelis (81) contributed to Marmion's 315 - well ahead of fellow sectional qualifiers Kaneland (344) and Burlington Central (347). All three teams advance to play Monday at Emerald Hill Golf Course in Sterling.

Junior Brian Davoust (77), junior Ryan Babich (85), junior Zach Ramos (89) and sophomore Gavin Roberts (93) paced Kaneland while sophomore Matthew Kowalik (79), sophomore Camden Sarallo (87) and seniors Ivan Larson (90) and Matthew Lemon (91) paced the Rockets.

At Huntley:

Barrington fired a 289 at Pinecrest to win the Class 3A Huntley regional.

Sophomore Andre Schauenberg carded red numbers with a 69 to pace the Broncos, who also got great rounds from junior Walker Grelle (72), Alex Lechuga (73) and William Lange (75).

Lake Zurich (316) and Huntley (318) also advanced to the Dundee-Crown sectional at Randall Oaks next week.

Brendan Busky led Huntley with a 72.

Hampshire's Eric Brown (78), Cary-Grove's Maddux Tarasievich (76) and Erik Pietrzyk (78) and Dundee-Crown's Jake Russell (78) also broke 80 and will play at sectionals Monday.

At Benet:

Wheaton Academy senior Sam Dykema played nearly flawless golf on Wednesday afternoon.

He needed just four shots on 14 of the 18 holes at St. Andrews Golf Course in West Chicago.

He carded a 70 to earn meet medalist at the Class 2A Benet regional.

But Dykema, a seasoned golfer with an extensive list of awards, was one of the last participants to leave for the parking lot after all the awards were handed out.

Dykema had a good reason for his delay - he couldn't find his golf bag.

That was one of the only flaws on an otherwise ideal day for Dykema.

His strong performance helped guide Wheaton Academy to the team title. The Warriors shot a 294 to claim top honors, advancing to Monday's St. Viator sectional. Benet and St. Viator (326) also punched a ticket to sectionals.

Dykema, an Indiana Wesleyan recruit, fired a 34 on the front nine.

St. Francis golf coach Tony Perez said he was thrilled that three of his golfers advanced to sectionals - freshman Beckett Jones, junior James Collie and junior Nicolas Sparacio.

Junior Jack Mulligan led the Red Devils with a 71. Peter Sakkos (72) and Emil Riegger (73) were right behind with Dru Devata providing the fourth score at 78.

Glenbard West's Grant Roscich topped the field with a 67.

Danny Gainor led WW South with a 77.

Peter Ahern also shot a 77 for Glenbard East.
