White Sox say La Russa will not return to manage this season

Before Friday night's game against the Tigers at Guaranteed Rate Field, acting White Sox manager Miguel Cairo said he still speaks with Tony La Russa on a regular basis.

"He's doing good," Cairo said. "Of course it feels weird (he's not around). He's our manager, he's the manager of the Chicago White Sox. I miss him, we miss him, but right now we don't (know) when he's going to come back."

Before Saturday night's game against Detroit, the Sox announced "after undergoing additional testing and medical procedures over the past week," La Russa won't be back this season.

The 77-year-old La Russa left the White Sox right before an Aug. 30 home game against the Royals with a heart issue.

Sox general manager Rick Hahn said he spoke with La Russa Saturday.

"We are going to continue to follow his wishes of keeping much of the specific details and his personal information quiet," Hahn said. "I did speak to him on the way in this morning and he had no issue with us letting everybody know that there is a treatment protocol in place."

Hahn did not want to discuss La Russa's future with the White Sox.

"Right now, the focus is fully on his health," Hahn said. "We are going to finish up this season first and then address everything when it's appropriate to turn the page at the end of this year." Back managing for the first time since winning the World Series with the Cardinals in 2011, La Russa was 93-69 with the Sox last season and 7-75 this year.
