Two share the lead after first round of Illinois PGA Championship in Barrington

Kyle Donovan, of Oak Park Country Club, and Jeff Kellen, of Butler National in Oak Park, carded 3-under-par 68s Monday to share the first-round lead in the Illinois PGA Championship at Makray Memorial in Barrington.

The tourney, played for the first time 100 years ago, is being held for the first time at Makray and Doug Ghim's course record 65 stood up through the first 18 holes of the 54-hole test. Ghim, now a PGA Tour player, set the record 11 years ago when he was playing in the Illinois State Junior Championship.

Donovan and Kellen have some strong challengers within striking distance heading into Tuesday's second round, after which the field will be cut to the low 50 and ties. Brian Carroll, of The Hawk in St. Charles, and Roy Biancalana, of Blackberry Oaks in Bristol, are one shot behind the co-leaders. Carroll is leading the IPGA Player of the Year standings.

Defending champion Andy Mickelson, of Mistwood in Romeoville, and 13-time champion Mike Small, the men's coach at the University of Illinois, share fifth place with Steve DiNino, of Countryside in Mundelein.

Biancalana and Small both own titles in the IPGA senior events this season, Biancalana in the IPGA Senior Championship and Small in the Illinois Senior Open.
