Donovan believes his opinion would be heard in potential Bulls trades
The NBA trade deadline is now less than a month away.
In theory, it would make sense for the Bulls to make a move that might increase their chances of advancing in the playoffs. In reality, a lack of attractive trade pieces, limited future first-round picks and a rising payroll make things difficult.
"His comment to me, Arturas (Karnisovas), when we spoke was like, 'Listen, when we get closer to this we'll fill you in,'" coach Billy Donovan said before Friday's game. "But I didn't get a sense there really was much going on.
"It's been hard, I think, for front offices to evaluate teams this season because (so many players) have been in and out and they haven't been whole. That makes it really hard to evaluate your team."
Donovan mentioned the Bulls have a strong team chemistry and gave an example of how adding Daniel Theis at the deadline last year messed things up a little since it created a two-big man lineup. Donovan was asked how much of a say he'll have in any potential deals.
"We can have open and honest discussions about our team, which I think is really healthy," Donovan said. "I think Arturas and I have a really good partnership in this thing. He is the boss, ultimately he's going to make the final decisions. But I do feel like he'll listen to me in terms of what my opinions are.
"If for some reason, my opinion is not the opinion he would elect to go with, I am still on board because I trust him. That's his job, he's looking at it from a different perspective than I am. I think Arturas would without question listen to me and there would be things I would present and pose to him in any situation, just based on my knowledge of the team. We're in constant communication all the time."
