Swanson sets school record with 37 points as Barrington rolls into Komaromy semifinals

Sophie Swanson was feeling it early. Her Barrington teammates were as well.

The Fillies nailed 6 3-pointers in their first 8 possessions while overwhelming Fenwick, 75-39, in the quarterfinals of the Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown.

Swanson made 3 of those early shots. Laura Mahlum made a pair, and Allison Funk added 1 as well. But it was Swanson who stayed hot throughout the game. By halftime, she had outscored the Friars 23-20 by herself. She went on to set the school single-game scoring record with 37 points. The Barrington contingent erupted when she reached the mark with a fourth-quarter free throw.

"During shootaround I was pretty consistent with my shots," said Swanson. "I was hitting everything so I just thought I had to continue that throughout the game.

"We lost to (Fenwick) my freshman year, so coming in we knew it was going to be a game we wanted to play well, and we did. It was a really nice team win."

The Fillies (10-4) cruised into a 6:30 p.m. semifinal matchup on Wednesday with South Elgin, a 61-50 winner against Lake Park.

Molly O'Riordan contributed 11 points, 5 rebounds, 5 blocked shots, and 3 assists for Barrington. Mahlum finished with 10 points while Gwen Adler added 8 points and 7 rebounds.

Mira Schwanke did her best to keep Fenwick in the game, hitting 4 first-half 3-pointers, including a couple from the cafeteria, and finishing with 19 points. But the Friars had no answer for Swanson, who scored in almost every way imaginable.

"[Swanson] had a real nice game," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "It's nice for her to get that single-game scoring record, but I thought overall today, defensively we did some good things. I thought we moved the ball well on offense and had a lot of people who were involved in scoring. As many points as she had, we still had a lot of kids doing a lot of scoring."

The Fillies led the 9-time Komaromy champs 24-6 after one quarter and never looked back.

Swanson scored 13 points in the first quarter, 10 more in the second and 9 in a relatively quiet third. Her teammates got involved as the Fillies racked up 27 points in that third period. Swanson added 5 more points to reach the milestone during the running-clock fourth quarter.
