Cubs claim pitcher Wade Miley off waivers from Reds

After the rotation posted a 5.27 ERA last season, the Cubs headed into the off-season with an obvious need for starting pitching.

They took a nice first step on Friday, claiming left-hander Wade Miley off waivers from the Reds.

The Cubs will pay the 35-year-old veteran $10 million in 2022.

An 11-year veteran, Miley is coming off one of the best seasons of his career.

In 28 starts for Cincinnati, he was 12-7 with a 3.37 ERA. Miley also pitched his first no-hitter, against Cleveland on May 7.

Over 16 starts from May 31 to Aug. 27, Miley was 7-0 with a 2.41 ERA.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder is 97-92 with a 4.15 ERA over 283 games (277 starts) with Arizona (2008-14), Boston (2015), Seattle (2016), Baltimore (2016-17), Milwaukee (2018), Houston (2019) and Cincinnati (2020-21).

Looking ahead to next season, Kyle Hendricks is the Cubs' only lock in the rotation. Adbert Alzolay, Alec Mills, Justin Steele and Keegan Thompson are in the mix to claim starting jobs.
