Defending champ Farnam up by 2 strokes at Illinois Amateur

Crystal Lake's Ethan Farnam opened up a 2-stroke lead at the Illinois Amateur after shooting a second-round 4-under par 68 at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville on Wednesday.

Farnam, who is seeking to become the first repeat champ since 2003, is 11-under overall and 2 strokes ahead of Oak Lawn's Jake Hennessey.

Morton's Tommy Kuhl, who played in all 10 of the Illinois men's golf team's 2020-21 tournaments, is 3 back after a 67. Hinsdale's Mac McClear is at 7 under, and Lake Bluff's Connor Polender and Elmhurst's Jordan Less are 6 under. Arlington Heights' Timmy Crawford shot 68 on Wednesday and is 6 back.

Billy Gneiser, the 17-year-old grandson of Stan Mikita, made the cut after shooting a second-round 73. He's tied for 19th at 1-over 143.

The event concludes with 36 holes Thursday.
