Cubs promote Greenberg, Breslow to assistant GM roles

After replacing Theo Epstein as the Cubs' president of baseball operations early last week, Jed Hoyer strongly hinted he'd be looking at outside candidates for his old job as general manager.

"I really do value fresh ideas and new ideas," Hoyer said. "I think that's important. I think that's part of the beauty of going outside the organization. I kind of encourage that and I think, for me, the most important thing I'm going to be trying to find is a sense of trust.

"That's probably part of the relationship with Theo that I value on top of everything else, that these are high-pressure jobs and you make a lot of tough decisions and things are going to go wrong. And I think you have to know that person is with you 100% and that there's no dividing the two of you.,

Before launching the search for a new GM, Hoyer said "continuity is a wonderful thing" and "we have a lot of great employees here."

On Monday, the Cubs announced multiple internal promotions, headed by Jeff Greenberg and Craig Breslow. Both are now assistant general managers, and Breslow was also named vice president, pitching.

Greenberg joined the Cubs' baseball operations department in 2012 and had been working as assistant to the GM.

He's also been the club's director of baseball operations and director of pro scouting.

Breslow, who pitched in the major leagues for 12 seasons, joined the Cubs in 2019 as director of strategic initiatives before being named director, pitching/special assistant to the president and GM prior to the 2020 season.
