Girls swimming and diving: Fremd edges Schaumburg for sectional crown

Despite only having two first-place finishes, the Fremd girls swimming team nosed out Schaumburg 177-175 Saturday to win the Elk Grove sectional championship.

Freshman Katie Kuehn led the Vikings with firsts in the 50-yard freestyle (23.98) and in the 100 free (52.71).

Schaumburg junior Nina Mollin was the star of the meet, winning four events. She took the 200 IM in 2:02.62, the butterfly in 55.92, the 500 free in 5:00.60 and the breaststroke in 1:05.04.

Saxons junior Madison Dohrn was a double winner, placing first in the 200 free in 1:53.43 and in the backstroke in 55.75.

Hoffman Estates' Brooklyn Fuscone won the diving competition with 470.90 points.

At Metea Valley:

Neuqua Valley senior McKenna Stone won four events to lead the Wildcats to the sectional title with 302 points. Oswego East was second with 235 and Naperville North third with 190.

Stone won the 200 IM in 2:00.75, the 50 free in 22.70, the butterfly in 53.04 and the breaststroke in 1:01.77.

The Wildcats also got firsts from Rachel Stege in the 200 free (1:46.40) and in the 500 free (4:40.03). Neuqua's Megan Ciezczak won the 100 free in 50.42 and teammate Jane Riehs was the diving champ with 450.75 points.

Rosary's Jessica Geriane won the backstroke in 54.77.

At St. Charles North:

The host North Stars edged rival St. Charles East for the team title 228-204 as junior Paige Armstrong won the 200 free in 1:50.27 and the backstroke in 55.93. The North Stars also got double wins from junior Angela Messina in the 200 IM (2:02.59) and the breaststroke (1:03.85).

St. Charles East junior Molly Yetter was a double winner, taking the 50 free in 22.68 and the 100 free in 51.29.

East junior Katie Kempff won diving (338.30), North's Jillian Wilson took the butterfly in 55.72 and SCN's Elizabeth Bawolek won the 500 free in 4:58.39.

At Glenbrook South:

Hersey's Mollie Lumsden won the 200 free in 1:52.56 and the Huskies were third as a team with 128 points. New Trier won the event with 205 and Evanston was second with 168.

At Hinsdale Central:

The host Red Devils ran away with the sectional title, scoring 246 points. Downers Grove North was second with 180 and Downers South third with 158.

Central's Melanie Quinones won the 50 free (23.61) and the 100 free (51.92). The Red Devils also got wins from Kendall Pickering in the 200 IM (2:03.35), the backstroke (55.03) and the breaststroke (1:03.44).
