Clubhouse Chatter: Where is the best stadium food?

What our Sports staff has to say while waiting for the games to resume.

It's been a few years since I've been able to enjoy my favorite, but back then you couldn't beat a cheeseburger fresh off the grill at an Elgin High School football game at Memorial Field. Cooked to perfection by the "E" Booster Club, it was always a necessity when covering the Maroons.

I'm the rare sports writer/sports fan who doesn't really enjoy eating at games. I go to either work or if I'm going as a fan I go to watch the game. I honestly can't remember anything special I've eaten at a game.

- John Lemon

I don't go to sporting events as a fan. I can't afford it. And I certainly couldn't afford to eat any of the insanely expensive food at those venues.

There is something great about a bratwurst with mustard and sauerkraut bought from the concession stand below Section 223 at Wrigley Field. And Pat Foley and Eddie Olczyk are right - the soft serve ice cream at the United Center is, like the old Celozzi-Ettleson Chevrolet dealership, hard to find and tough to beat.

Stadium food isn't exactly my specialty, but I must say the grub at Kauffman Stadium is delicious. Last summer, my wife and I went to Kansas City to visit friends and we were lucky enough to see the Royals play from right behind home plate. Perfect seats to watch Naperville Central alum Nicky Lopez compete for the Royals!

It's become a ritual before high school football games. Arrive plenty early, get the stat sheets set up for the game, then go get a burger (or two) hot off the grill set up next to the concession stand. It's a simple and satisfying meal that focuses the mind and starts a long night that doesn't end until our daily deadline shows its fangs again.

Honestly have no opinion on food inside the stadiums because as sports writers, we don't eat it. But for food around an arena, give me Rippy's ribs in Nashville every time.
