Clubhouse Chatter: Which pro sport would you have played?
What our Sports staff has to say while waiting for the games to resume.
My top choice would be NBA player. It was fun playing pickup basketball at the Lattof Y back in the day, can only imagine what a rush it would be to do that as one of the world's best athletes. That said, it would be tough to beat the life of an NFL backup quarterback or MLB relief pitcher.

Were I to have the ability to play a professional sport it would have been baseball. Of the three sports I played in high school - football, basketball and baseball - I was most proficient at the latter, fundamentally sound at catcher and first base. I still believe that as a catcher I could call a game at the professional level. Unfortunately, I lack any other requirement.

This answer has evolved through the years, or perhaps more accurately has changed as reality set in. Third grade, quarterback for the San Diego Chargers. Sixth grade, shortstop for the Cubs. Junior high, shooting guard for the Bulls. High school, PGA Tour. I'll guess I'll stick with the latter because I can't imagine it gets better than being paid to play golf.

ABC's "Wide World of Sports" had an effect on me. I spent countless Saturday afternoons in my youth mesmerized by seldom-televised sports such as lumberjack competitions, cliff diving and demolition derby. My hands-down favorite was barrel jumping. Guys on skates trying to leap over barrels laid out on ice? Sold. Told mom I wanted to do that for a living. Seemed like a solid career choice when I was 9.

Without a doubt, baseball. Played it as a kid in the summer. On the farm, throwing a tennis ball against the shed, I was Ernie Banks, Glenn Beckert, Don Kessinger, Ron Santo, or Randy Hundley depending on the day. But, alas, I was not athletically gifted, so journalism became the love of my life.
