As a way to show local first responders appreciation for helping keep local residents safe during the coronavirus pandemic, Cubs Charities and Schwarber's Neighborhood Heroes will provide meals on April 2.

The latter charity is sponsored by Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber.

"I want to say a big thanks to all the first responders and nurses and other hospital workers that are working through these tough times and making sure the community is out there being safe and treating all the people that need to be treated," Schwarber said on a social media video. "Being the son of a first responder, I know all the sacrifices you guys are making. Especially during these tough times, I just want to give you guys a big thank you. Keep up with all the great work and hopefully we get to see you really soon in Chicago. Thank you guys again for your service. You guys are making everyone proud."

Officers at the 19th District Police Department will receive breakfast, lunch and dinner on Thursday.

Chicago Fire Department Engine Co. 78 firefighters and EMTs will receive a full day of meals across three days to accommodate shift schedules. Meals will be delivered safely in protocol with CDC social distancing guidelines.

The meals will be funded by Cubs Charities and proceeds from Schwarber's Block Party, an annual event benefiting Schwarber's Neighborhood Heroes campaign that honors and assists first responders by providing essential tools and experiences that improve their quality of life and help them better serve their communities.

Schwarber led the Cubs with 38 home runs last season and heated up down the stretch, batting .348 with 11 doubles, 9 home runs and 25 RBI over his final 32 games.
