Clubhouse Chatter: With no sports, how our writers are filling the void
What our columnists and sports writers have to say as they wait for the games to resume.
How are you filling the void during your nonworking hours with no sports on TV?
I've lost weight over the last few years by making sensible dietary changes and finding time for a regular exercise routine. Part of that exercise routine is walking three miles six days a week. The indoor track at the park district facility in my suburb is now closed and probably will be for some time. Sidewalks remain wide open. And the weather is warming up. Thus, the routine shifted outdoors this week. I turn off cable news, turn off phone notifications, lace up my sneakers and walk for an hour each day. Walking outside burns calories and clears the mind. And we could all use a mental reset about now.

With the local health club closed, I'm looking for other ways to get exercise. That means my dog is getting more and longer walks than he usually does.

One week into the COVID-19 pandemic, and there has been no downtime for the prep sports staff. We remain busy with producing our all-area boys basketball teams (running in Sunday's paper), coordinating spring previews for the remaining spring sports, working on COVID-19 stories and brainstorming dozens and dozens of ideas for future COVID-19 stories. I do feel like the college student who's suddenly home with no place to go at night. "Yes, Family. I'm home for dinner. AGAIN."

With what downtime I do have, I'm catching up on some reading, and watching some of the old Cubs' games on Marquee.
