Glenbard North reigns in DuKane

For the second season in a row, Glenbard North is the king of the DuKane Conference in wrestling.

Boasting seven individual champions, the Panthers cruised to a 277.5 team point total, easily outdistancing St. Charles East (200 points) and Wheaton North (168).

"We're proud of the team," Glenbard North coach Mark Hahn said. "They came there with a purpose in mind. This team has worked extremely hard this year... . We've been pushing them pretty hard. Never got any complaints out of them.

"There's no real superstars on this team, it's just a lot of grinders that work hard and get after it."

Jimmy Marre (113 pounds), Ronan Schuelke (120), Matt Chi (132), Kyler Kradle (152), Alonzo Smiley (182), Jaylin Garay (195) and Paulie Robertson (285) all took home conference titles for the Panthers.

Chi's title, in particular, stood out for the Panthers. Chi prevailed over Wheaton North's Logan Balosky in a 6-5 decision.

"(Chi) works really hard," Hahn said. "He beat (Balosky) in the finals that pinned him the last time they wrestled...for him coming through to win it, that was pretty special. The kids all kind of got behind him on that."

Paul Woo (106 pounds) took second for the Panthers, while Patrick Curran (138) and Cody Dertz (160) followed in third. Jack Barracca (145), Nathan Anagnostopoulos (170) and David Ruiz (220) took fourth. Nolan Allen (126) finished in fifth.

Wheaton North had one conference champion, Cam'Ron Harper, who prevailed in the 220-pound final over Lake Park's Victor Rodriguez 5-4. It was his first conference title.

"It feels amazing," Harper said. "I feel like I've worked so much harder (than) previous years."

Harper had previously lost to Rodriguez in a match a few months ago.

"I was a lot more confident (this time around). I was a lot more aggressive," Harper said.

Sam Lemp (120 pounds), Balosky (132), Nick Lemp (138), Paul Murphy-Hoff (145) and Nathan Love (170) all took second for the Falcons.

Viktor Castro (113) placed third, and Buddy Evangelista (160) and Kameron Vine (285) each took fourth. Peyton Lomenick (152), Samir Manzur (182) took fifth and Moises Sanchez (126) took sixth.

Wheaton Warrenville South took sixth as a team, headlined by Aidan Waszak's second-place finish against Geneva's Ian Huck in the 126-pound final. Huck lost in last year's conference final to WW South's Dominic Duve but prevailed in his second attempt 13-6 over Waszak.

Waszak began the season up a weight class at 132 but recertified down earlier in the season.

"Me and my buddy (teammate) Josh Dorr, who took third today (at 132), he wanted to certify at 132," Waszak said. "He wrestled 138 for most of the season. We both agreed it's probably going to be better for us if we both go down."

Luke Burgess (106 pounds), Dorr and Will Rising (170) took third for the Tigers. Andrew Janiec (138), Greg Nuter (182) and Peter Kim (195) took fourth. Jaidyn Buziecki (120) and Chase Nufer (285) finished in sixth.
