Jacobs takes rivalry match over Dundee-Crown
Ryan Golnick certainly epitomizes the word toughness.
The Jacobs junior 220-pounder, who was stunned by a shot to the nose, rebounded to post a 20-3 technical fall win over Carter Fitch of Dundee-Crown.
Golnick's gutsy effort propelled Jacobs to a 48-26 Fox Valley Conference win over District 300 rival Dundee-Crown Thursday night in Algonquin.
"When I get injured it usually super energizes me," said Golnick. "I have a tougher mentality and I am focused and ready to execute my game plan."
Jacobs (7-6, 3-1) was able register 6 pins in the match. Picking up pins for the Golden Eagles were Dom Ducato (106), James Wright (113), Bart Grudek (138), Jake Harrier (145), Vince Ducato (170) and Antonio Carlos (285).
"Dom and James at the beginning of our lineup are very quick and scrappy," said Jacobs coach Gary Conrad. "We call them dynamite. Bart, Jake, Antonio and Jake had nice pins. They had nice nights. D-C came to ready to wrestle and caught us by surprise at the beginning of the match. We rebounded after a slow start and wrestled pretty well."
Joel Ridle (132) won by major decision and Jorge Adams (160) claimed a win by decision.
D-C (12-6, 4-3), which was hindered by the flu bug, won 3 matches on the mat and 2 by forfeit.
With the match starting at 126 pounds, junior Amare Jones gave the Chargers an early 5-0 lead with an 18-3 tech fall win over Jacobs' Jack Baruck.
The Chargers got their only pin of the night as sophomore Matt Impostato (120) ended the match with a pin of Ethan Pagnalis of Jacobs in 18 seconds.
"Amare and Matt are practice partners and they really get after it in the wrestling room," said D-C coach Tim Hayes. "They drive each other and make each other better. Matt is a sophomore and Amare is a junior. So, they get another shot next season to wrestle with each other again next year. They both wrestled well tonight and have wrestled well all season. They are only going to get better on the mats."
Hayes also got a gutsy 5-3 overtime win by Gabe Scales (152) over Jacobs' Alex Epstein.
Wyatt Griggel (182) and Damian Sandoval (195) won by forfeit for the Chargers.
"I liked that we were able to field a full lineup but we had a lot of kids battling the flu," said Hayes, "A lot of kids gutted it out tonight. Jacobs is a very good team with a lot of good wrestlers. They really took it to us in some of the matches."
