Fire trades homegrown Lillard to Inter Miami

The Chicago Fire Thursday traded central defender Grant Lillard to expansion side Inter Miami.

The Fire received $75,000 in general allocation money for Lillard, 23, who played high school soccer at Hinsdale Central. Lillard becomes the eighth signed player for Inter Miami, which begins play in 2020.

"Grant is a promising young defender," Paul McDonough, Inter Miami CF's sporting director, said in a team news release. "We are in the midst of building our team and adding key pieces to complement our supplemental roster."

The trade comes a day after the Fire dismissed coach Veljko Paunovic and his staff.

Lillard played in 14 games over two seasons with the Fire.
