Cubs pick up Rizzo's $16.5 million option for 2020 season
It's been an eventful two days for Anthony Rizzo.
On Sunday, the Cubs' first baseman won his third Gold Glove, beating out the Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt and the Diamondbacks' Christian Walker.
On Monday, the Cubs announced they exercised Rizzo's 2020 club option.
Rizzo will make $16.5 million next season and the Cubs hold the same option for 2021.
The 30-year-old Rizzo established career highs last season with a .293 batting average and .405 on-base percentage while adding 29 doubles, 27 home runs and 94 RBI in 146 games.
The Cubs declined 2020 options on pitchers Brandon Morrow, David Phelps, Tony Barnette and Kendall Graveman.
They also selected the contract of pitcher Colin Rea from Class AAA Iowa and outrighted Allen Webster to Iowa. The Cubs' 40-man roster stands at 32.
Signed to replace closer Wade Davis after the 2017 season, Morrow had 22 saves in 24 opportunities to go with a 1.47 ERA in 2018.
The right-hander last pitched for the Cubs on July 15 in '18 and never returned from right arm injuries. Morrow exits the Cubs with a $3 million buyout.
Rea, 29, was 14-4 with a 3.95 ERA in 26 starts for Iowa last season, earning Pacific Coast League pitcher of the year honors.
