Girls volleyball: Jacobs slams Hampshire

Lisa Dwyer was happy with the results.

The veteran Jacobs High School volleyball coach was ecstatic with the Golden Eagles' 25-17, 25-20 Fox Valley Conference win over Hampshire Tuesday night at the Eagles Nest in Algonquin.

Jacobs move to 2-1 overall and 2-1 FVC play.

"For the most part we controlled the match throughout the night," said Dwyer. "We were a little more patient and played with much more intensity in the second game. I addressed that situation between the first and second games. We made some minor changes between games and it seemed to work. I thought we regrouped in the match when we had to."

Dwyer received solid efforts from several Golden Eagles including Maggie Wallenberger who collected 7 kills, 4 blocks and 3 aces.

"Our communication tonight was excellent," said Wallenberger. "We really fought both games and we are improving every match. We have very good freshmen and sophomores who are fitting in. We have a good mix."

Wallenberger got plenty of help from her teammates in the victory.

Ireland Van Stone contributed 4 kills with 6 aces including 5 crucial aces in a row in the first game. Rachel Kaczorowski set up the Golden Eagles offense masterfully with 16 set assists. Kaczorowski was also solid defensively with 8 digs.

Meredith Giustino had a good overall match for the Eagles with 2 kills and 2 aces along with 7 digs. Maggie Breeze contributed on the defensive side with 6 digs.

"We had a lot of good individual efforts," said Dwyer. "We are starting to come together as a team. I like our chemistry."

Hampshire (1-3, 0-3) got 6 kills from Kylee Tondryk and 4 aces by Aliyah Andrade.

"We are consistently inconsistent," said Hampshire coach Kim Millard. "This was a tough loss for us. We have spurts where we play very well. It is very frustrating. In this conference (FVC) you need to be consistent to win. We are improving and I like that."

In Game 1, there were 6 lead changes and ties. With the score tied at 17, Jacobs scored the last 8 points to win Game 1.

Wallenberger collected 4 kills while Giustino served an ace to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage in the match.

Jacobs started fast in Game 2 jumping out a 7-2 lead. Van Stone and Wallenberger tallied 2 kills each during the early surge.

Hampshire whittled away at the early deficit and got within 21-19 on a kill by Kondryk.

The Whip-Purs couldn't get any closer. A kill by Wallenberger gave the Eagles the game and match.
