Softball: Mundelein edges Deerfield

Freshman Kellie Shanahan was 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBI, Kira Buckner went the distance in the circle, and Mundelein's softball team edged ninth-seeded Deerfield 3-2 in a semifinal of the Class 4A Palatine regional Wednesday.

No. 7 Mundelein (14-15) advances to Friday's 4:30 p.m. final against top-seeded Palatine.


Mundelein also got extra-base hits from Danielle Lambert (triple) and Cheyenne Pellettiere (double). Emma Hanlin had an RBI. Buckner did not allow an earned run. She gave up 3 hits, walked six and struck out eight.

Prairie Ridge 12, Vernon Hills 1: At Vernon Hills, the No. 6 seed and Class 3A regional host was upset by the 11th-seeded Wolves.

Vernon Hills finishes the season 16-16-1.

Prairie Ridge advances to Saturday's 11 a.m. final against No. 3 Grayslake Central.

Woodstock North 10, Lakes 0: At Marengo, Ellie Thurow pitched the fifth-seeded Thunder to a five-inning win in the Class 3A regional semifinal.
