Boys track and field: Antioch wins Guilford sectional

Zach Grindley won three field events, Matt Becker and Chase Becker earned state berths in both the shot put and discus, and Antioch's boys track and field team captured the Class 3A Rockford Guilford sectional Friday.

Antioch totaled 112 points, 10 more than runner-up Huntley. Grant (48) was fourth behind DeKalb (62).

Grindley captured the long jump (22-3), high jump (6-5) and triple jump (44-3). Matt Becker (53-6) and Chase Becker (51-3) went 1-2 in the shot put. Chase Becker (164-11) won the discus, while Matt Becker took third but threw a state-qualifying 158-3. Antioch also received championship efforts from Nico Garcia in the pole vault (13-5) and Charlie Smith in the 1,600-meter run (4:18.38). The Sequoits qualified for state their 1,600 relay (second, 3:27.18), as well.

Defending 400 state champ Jason Thormo of Grant won his specialty in 49.55. The Bulldogs also advanced their 400 relay (winning 42.79), 1,600 relay (winning 3:25.12), Justin Splitt in the 800 (fifth, 1:56.88) and Bobby Cayet in the 300 intermediate hurdles (second, 39.65).
