Badminton: Stevenson second after Day 1

Two-time defending state champion Stevenson sits in second place after first-day action in the state badminton finals at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Fremd totaled 12 points Friday, with Stevenson (10.5) and Neuqua Valley (9.5) right behind.

Stevenson picked up three wins apiece from singles players Kaitlyn Lu and Shibani Ram and doubles teams Emily Hu/Jenny Yang and Jyotsna Harikrishna/Benna Li.

Lu lost her first match to Fremd's Rachel Ye (21-6, 21-7) before three matches in a row. She then suffered a loss in the fourth-round consolation bracket.

Ram went 3-0, finishing with a 21-11, 21-11 win over Libertyville's Kathleen Jin. Ram faces Wheaton Warrenville South's Julianna Rylko in Saturday's quarterfinals.

Hu/Yang also won all three of their matches. Their quarterfinal opponents are Metea Valley's Vyshnavi Nukasani/Vivian Kok.

Stevenson's team of Harikrishna/Li were 3-0 as well, finishing the day with a 21-12, 21-12 win over Lake Forest's Nika Belova/Grace Geschiedle. Harikrishna/Li next face Fremd's Sharon Wu/Maggie Wu.
