Girls lacrosse: Barrington rolls past Fremd

The Barrington girls lacrosse team celebrated Senior Night in a big way.

The Fillies celebrated their third Mid-Suburban West championship Thursday night with a 19-4 win over the Fremd Vikings in Barrington. The victory puts the Fillies at 12-3 and 4-0 in conference play.

The Fillies have lost to one Illinois team, York a few weeks ago 16-15.

Barrington can finish off the conference undefeated next Tuesday when it plays Palatine.

Barrington beat Hoffman Estates and would win the tie breaker.

"This was really nice to win the championship," said senior attacker Sedona Falco, who scored 4 goals and had 3 assists. "We got our momentum going early. When you take a lead a big lead early (7-0) like we did it can psych the other team out. You take their confidence away."

Barrington coach Charles Solomon, who has won three conference championships in the three years he has been head coach, went with an all-senior starting lineup.

"I wanted to go with all seniors tonight," said Solomon. "The girls did all the little things that needed to be done to gives us a good start. They all showed a lot of grit tonight."

Julia Stegvik helped the Fillies get off to a fast start by scoring 22 seconds into the game.

Sedona, the team's leading scorer, followed with a goal on a team advantage and followed with a goal on a penalty shot.

Senior Caroline Tomasian picked up a loose ground ball near the Viking net to score with 18:35 left in the first half for a 4-0 lead. Tomasian followed that goal 10 seconds later on an assist from Falco who had won the face off.

"Sedona is always looking for the open player," said Tomasian. "She always complements other players and we complement her. Many of us have played together for a long time and we know how to communicate. Communication is everything. "

Sedona scored again for a 6-0 lead and was followed by a goal by Maddie Lunn to lead 7-0.

Fremd's Libby Anderson pulled the Vikings to 7-2 on a pair of goals with 7:05 left in the first half.

But another 5-0 run by Barrington gave the Fillies a 12-2 halftime lead.

Kate Goodwin and Grace Hammond scored two early second half goals for the 0-16, 0-5 Vikings to get back to 12-4 but Barrington took over putting together a 7-0 streak to finish the game.

"We had some nice runs where we played well," said Solomon. "We put out a great effort."

"Coach pushes us to be the best we can and he hold's us to high standards," said Falco. "As I hold myself and the rest of the team to a high standard."

"I know we're 0-16," said Fremd coach Keith Sorensen, "but, this was a good game for us. We lost, yes, but our team fought hard and we played very scrappy. Our goalie Melin Bagel played a very good game with 10 saves. I'm very proud of the effort that this team gave tonight."
