Softball: Zaucha powers Lake Zurich to victory
Julia Zaucha was 4-for-6 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI, and Lake Zurich pounded Zion-Benton 22-6 in North Suburban Conference softball action Tuesday.
Haley Gajewski went 3-for-6 with a triple, double and 4 RBI for the Bears, and Elizabeth Chialdikas was 3-for-6 with 4 RBI and her fifth homer in three games. Lake Zurich's other offensive contributors included Maura Ginn (3-for-6), Olivia Collins (2-for-4), Savanah Welcing (2-for-4, double, 3 RBI) and Kennedy Williams (2-for-2, triple, 3 RBI).
Antioch 10, Wauconda 2: Abby Pyburn was 3-for-4 with a homer, triple and 3 RBI, and the visiting Sequoits won in Northern Lake County Conference action.
Antioch also got big games offensively from Gabby Debevec (2-for-4), Piper Foote (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Rilee Schreiner (2-for-4, double, RBI), Avery Malicki (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI), Hailey Webb (2-for-4) and Megan Lawrence (double). Jeri Bonaguidi pitched 4 innings for the win.
Wauconda got doubles from Calli Janik, Taylor Koehler, Hannah Miller and Alexis De La Roca.
Warren 15, Waukegan 1: After beating Mundelein a rain-shortened game Monday, the Blue Devils captured another North Suburban Conference win.
Carissa Topolinski (4 RBI), Emily Craig (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and Kayla Nommensen all homered for Warren. Winning pitcher Kassie Jimenez struck out eight in 5 innings and helped herself at the plate by going 4-for-4.
Grayslake North 23, Lakes 3: Grace Brown finished a triple shy of the cycle for the visiting Knights in the Northern Lake County Conference game, finishing 4-for-4 with 4 RBI. Her double barely missed clearing the 240-foot sign in dead center field.
Ashton Moore (4-for-4, 2 RBI) hit her second blast of the season and her career. Faith Standerski (3-for-3, double, 6 RBI), Nicole Hughes (4-for-5, double, 6 RBI), Jess Pozezinski (2 RBI, walk), Alyssa Carr (RBI), Caitlin Barenbaum (walk), Meghan Delahunty (RBI, 2 walks) and Scout Kram (RBI, 2 walks) all had hits for Grayslake North (13-9, 5-1).
Emilie Cain (RBI) led the way for Lakes with 2 hits. Kelsey Ulrich, Ally Dietz (double), Grace Goodrich (triple, RBI), Haley Ovaska (RBI) and Cierra Fleming all had hits for Lakes.
Libertyville 12, Stevenson 1: Amanda Page was one out away from pitching a no-hitter in the North Suburban Conference game.
She settled for a 1-hitter, striking out six and walking one. Page also went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, and Ella Zombolo was 3-for-4 with 5 RBI for the Wildcats (13-7, 7-1).
Sarah Bennett (1-for-2, RBI) and Lexie Hill (1-for-3, double) also contributed offensively.
Hailey Barnes (RBI) doubled for Steveson's only hit.
Mundelein 15, Lake Forest 0: Cheyenne Pellettiere was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI, Elise Bernett went 2-for-2 with a double, and the Mustangs won the North Suburban Conference game in four innings.
Also for Mundelein, Emma Umbdenstock homered, Tess McKay tripled and Mia Arnoux was 2-for-3 with a double and 4 RBI. Emma Hallin pitched all 4 innings in earning the win, striking out six and allowing 2 hits.
Grayslake Central 3, Grant 2: Elisa Koshy homered and drove in 2 runs, and the host Rams pulled out the Northern Lake County Conference win.
Grace Bradley went the distance in the circle for Grayslake Central.
Calista Warmowski was 2-for-4 for Grant.
Libertyville 9, Zion-Benton 0: On Monday, Amanda Page pitched a 4-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking none in the North Suburban Conference game.
Sarah Bennett went 3-for-4 with a homer for Libertyville (12-7, 6-1), and Katie Jahncke was 2-for-3 with a double.
Vernon Hills 9, Lakes 3: On Monday, Delaney Bowen had a grand slam as the visiting Cougars captured the nonconference win.
Bowen also doubled and tripled, finishing 3-for-3 with 5 RBI. Madison Johnson went 2-for-2 with a walk for Vernon Hills (6-10).
