Baseball: Calhouns come through for Grayslake North

Oscar Calhoun delivered a go-ahead, 2-run double with two out in the bottom of the sixth, Adam Calhoun pitched a complete game, and Grayslake North edged Round Lake 2-1 in Northern Lake County Conference baseball action Thursday.

Grayslake North improved to 7-8 and 4-5 in the NLCC.

Adam Calhoun struck out seven and did not walk a batter. The only run he allowed was unearned. Nick Lovitsch was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI and made a great catch early in the game.

Round Lake starting pitcher Wyatt Hill went 5 innings, allowing 1 earned run and 4 hits and striking out five. Charlie Burton was 1-for-3 and drove in the Panthers' only run.

Warren 5, Wilmot (Wis.) 2: Bradley Vondruska pitched 6⅔ innings for the win, allowing 6 hits and no earned runs, while striking out seven in the nonconference game.

Casey Cobe (1-for-3, double), Gabe Schmitt (1-for-2, double, 2 RBI) and Mikey Kocen (2-for-3) led the way offensively for Warren (17-2), which won its 14th game in a row.

Grant 4, Antioch 2: Carlos Martinez pitched 6 quality innings, Danny Laughery was 4-for-4 with 3 doubles and 3 runs scored, and the visiting Bulldogs remained undefeated in Northern Lake County Conference action.

Martinez (3-0) did not allow an earned run, yielded 1 hit and struck out three. Mikal Ashley struck out two in the seventh to earn the save, as Grant improved to 15-3 and 9-0 in the NLCC. Val Cerna went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Antioch fell to 7-7 and 3-3 in the conference.

Grayslake Central 5, Mundelein 1: In a nonconference battle between two of Lake County's well established programs, the host Rams pulled out the win behind the pitching and hitting of Coby Moe.

For the second consecutive game, the Northwestern signee fanned 10 batters through 6⅓ innings, scattering 4 singles and allowing 1 unearned run.

Moe was pulled by coach Troy Whalen with a man on first once he hit the 90-pitch mark in favor of Ethan Peterson. Peterson recorded a strikeout and groundout in preserving the game for the Rams and improving their record to 12-3

Moe helped himself at the plate with 3 singles and an RBI, as the Rams got to Mundelein starter TJ Yakimisky for 3 runs in the third. Marcus Maristella had 2 hits, including a run-scoring single in the third.

The Mustangs got to Moe for a run in the third after two outs, but the Rams answered back on a pair of RBI hits from lefties Eric Sturm and Daniel Rogers.

Vernon Hills 5, Maine East 1 (susp.): Game 2 of the Central Suburban League North Division matchup was suspended due to darkness.

The game will pick up in the bottom of the sixth.

Michael Moore started for the Cougars and pitched 4 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits, while striking out six and walking one. Alex Yu pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

Brendan Holloway, Caleb Thomson, Danny Wizceb, Sam Polisky and Jake Morris each had hits for the Cougars. Quinn Geren was on base three times.
