Baseball: Mackey's homer rallies Lakes

Ethan Mackey hit a 3-run homer in the top of the sixth inning, and Lakes' baseball team rallied to beat Wauconda 3-2 in Northern Lake County Conference baseball action Wednesday.

Lakes (4-11, 1-3), which had only 2 hits in the game, trailed 1-0 until Mackey's blast. Carson Cobb earned the win, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) in 6 innings, striking out five and walking one. Ethan Clark pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out one, for the save.

Marcus Keller took the lost after allowing 2 hits and 3 runs over 5⅔ innings with 7 strikeouts. Brett Winkel went 2-for-3 for Wauconda (6-8, 3-4).

Stevenson 5, Lake Zurich 2: Jake Surane went 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI, and the Patriots bounced back from Tuesday's loss to the Bears in North Suburban Conference action.

Stevenson (10-5, 4-2) also got 2-hit games from Zach Taylor, Ryan McElhinny and Drew Ruchim. Frank Carris pitched 4 innings for the win, allowing 2 run (1 earned).

For Lake Zurich (9-5, 4-2), Anthony Mangano was 3-for-4 with a triple, and Sam Holtz went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

St. Patrick 14, Carmel 5: The visiting Shamrocks avenged Tuesday's loss, handing the Corsairs their first loss in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.

Carmel (8-2, 4-1) received 2 hits apiece from Lukas Galdoni (double), Tino Alivia and Jake Adams.

Grayslake Central 11, Von Steuben 1: Nic Presutti was 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored and an RBI, and Sean Gniadek pitched 3 innings for the win, as the Rams captured the nonconference decision in five innings.

Nate Twardock (triple) and Antonio Crews (double) had extra-base hits for Grayslake Central, which also got a single and 2 RBI from both Daniel Guckenberger and Coby Moe.

Nathan Casper and Aaron Lieberman each tossed scoreless innings for the Rams (11-3).

Grayslake North 7, Round Lake 2: Jeremy Rowder hit a go-ahead, 3-run homer in the sixth to lift the Knights to the Northern Lake County Conference win.

Rowder also doubled and finished 3-for-3 with 4 RBI. Matt Rennolds was 2-for-3, and Grant Garrett finished 2-for-4.

Round Lake got a pair of hits and an RBI from Charlie Burton.

Libertyville 9, Waukegan 0: Charlie Land (3 innings), Justin Miller (2 innings) and Peyton Jennings (2 innings) threw a combined 2-hitter, as the Wildcats beat the Bulldogs for the second day in a row in North Suburban Conference action.

Land also was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI. Dylan Drumke had a double and 3 RBI, and David Robertson doubled and scored twice.

Mundelein 11, Zion-Benton 1: TJ Yakimisky was 3-for-3 with 4 RBI, and the Mustangs (10-5) improved to 6-0 in the North Suburban Conference.

Austin Greco had a triple and an RBI for Mundelein. Noah Zoglman pitched 3 innings for the win, striking out four, and Justin Binz threw the final two innings.

Maine South 16, Vernon Hills 2: The Cougars were in search of their second win in as many days. Maine South had different plans.

The Hawks plated 12 runs off starter Caleb Thomson, who was chased with one out in the second inning.

Brendon Holloway (1-for-2, walk, run, stolen base) and Jack Peterson (1-for-1, 2 RBI) had hits for Vernon Hills (8-7, 1-3) in the Central Suburban League loss.

Warren 6, Lake Forest 1: On Tuesday, Dru Jasnoch pitched a complete game, allowing just 4 hits, as the Blue Devils won their 13th game in a row.

Warren improved to 16-2 and 5-0 in the North Suburban Conference.

The Blue Devils were led offensively by Mikey Kocen (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI), Gabe Schmitt (2-for-3) and Brian Rapanan (2-for-2).
