Girls lacrosse: Falco, Barrington roll past Washington

The only time Barrington senior girls lacrosse player Sedona Falco slows down is when there's no time left on the clock.

"She's our version of the Energizer Bunny on both ends of the field," said Fillies coach Charles Solomon. "She has no shut off button. Sedona makes a great impact on the field for us."

Falco, a four-year player and a two-time Mid-Suburban West all-conference player, helped get the Fillies off to a fast start in their 18-3 win Friday afternoon against the Washington Panthers from the Peoria area.

Falco scored the Fillies' first and third goals in the game's first 2:07. Barrington led 8-0 with 17:53 left in the first half.

Washington's Sage Kellenberger broke the shutout with 1 of her 2 goals with 17:08 left in the first half.

Barrington (2-0) led 14-1 before Olivia Stone and Kellenberger scored for Washington (1-4) just before halftime.

Lauren Conduitt scored 4 goals, while Olivia Smith added 3 goals as did Amelia Lunn. Katie Cocoma, Annabelle Smith, Julia Stegvik, and Caroline Tomasian each scored once for the Fillies.

"I play with a lot of passion," said Falco. "Playing up on the varsity for four years I became used to the intensity. I know I have to work hard to make myself a good player for my teammates. I'm a player that likes to be pushed."

Falco credit her sister Marisa, a 2004 Barrington grad, for being an inspiration.

"I learned a lot from her and how to play the game," said Falco.

On defense junior Sara Kennefick led a stout effort that limited the Panthers to 9 shots with goalie Caitlin Daugherty only having to make 3 saves.

"We get better on defense by what we do in a practice scrimmage," said Kennefick. "We put in the work and we go hard. Some direction comes from the goalie but as a defensive team we communicate well."

"Our defense is so important," said Solomon. "We pride ourselves in being one of the top five defensive teams in the state each year. We lost 12 players from last year's sectional final team but the players that we have are just as strong if not stronger in some positions. I expect this team to have a better scoring goal average and a better goal against average.

"This team has quite a few players who can score."

For the Panthers (1-4), who are in their first year of playing lacrosse, facing teams like Barrington is a help.

"We still have a lot to learn in the skills and the game itself," said Panthers coach Sarah Liebriech. "We found it hard to keep up with their skill level."
