Softball: Hersey goes 2-0 in Spring Fling

Because of the weather this week, there was no championship game played for Barrington's Spring Fling.

But Hersey's softball team would have been in it.

The Huskies' 6-3 win over Warren in Thursday's semifinal put them at 2-0 in the tourney and for the season.

Dayton-bound senior Sarah Bailitz (1-0) went 4⅔ innings to earn the win. Winona State recruit Brianna Luciana picked up the save, striking out four in the final 2⅓ innings.

Offensively, junior Savannah Gazda went 3-for-4 with her first varsity homer and a double. South Dakota recruit Makayla Tsagalis also doubled while junior Kylie Makuh went 2-for-3.

Maine West wins two: The Warriors (2-1) scored 5 runs in the bottom of the sixth to edge Deerfield 5-4 at the Barrington Spring Fling. Winning pitcher Brianna Migaczewski threw a 5-hitter and struck out three.

In their second game, the Warriors outhit Zion-Benton 16-14 for an 8-5 win.

Gabbi Demma (3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI) led the Warriors with 2 home runs while Amanda Bryne (2 RBI) and Migaczewski (2-for-3, 2 runs) also hit home runs.

Other top hitters for West were Brianna Torres (2-for-4, RBI, double), Angelis Beiza (3-for-4) and winning pitcher Jessia Steingard (3-for-4), who struck out three.

Palatine 14, Evanston 3: Palatine (1-1) earned the win behind junior pitcher Rhiann Dick, who struck out nine.

"I think we really came together for this game," said Grace Huff, a Northwestern-bound senior who went 3-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBI.

"We held each other up and strung the hits together when we needed. I'm really excited for this season and to see what this team can do. I am so lucky to have these 11 girls behind me and supporting me.

Appalachian State recruit Emily Parrot also went 3-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBI.

"This was an amazing team win," she said. "We worked on all of the little things and we all went up to bat ready to hit."

Teammate Kaitlin Reed was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI.

St. Viator 10, Highland Park 5: Allison Ardito had 3 hits for the Lions (3-3) while Nicole Ardito (double), Mary Naughton, winning pitcher Morgan Joyce (double) and Elise Bollard each had 2 hits.

Morgan Bielfeldt clubbed a 2-run homer and Naughton had solo blast.

Buffalo Grove 10, Vernon Hills 4: Freshman Angelina Craig had 3 hits and 2 RBI as the host Bison won their season opener behind sophomore pitcher Kylie Maineville.

Freshman Kimberly Stuercke, senior Sam Hansen (2 RBI), junior Megan Fontanetta (2 RBI) and senior Hannah Young each doubled for BG.
