Bedell's 18 points lead Vernon Hills past Maine East

Piper Bedell scored 18 points and grabbed 4 rebounds, and Vernon Hills' girls basketball team defeated visiting Maine East 46-30 in its Central Suburban League North Division opener Friday night.

Daniella Jarrell added 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals, and Kayla Caudle had another double-double (11 points, 12 rebounds), as the Cougars (4-3) snapped a three-game losing streak.

“We really played well on the defensive end,” Vernon Hills coach Paul Brettner said. “Holding them to 22 at half was OK, but holding them to 8 points in the second half was terrific. Maine East is much-improved. Coach (Nicole) Rinaldi has done a great job with them so far, and I'm sure they will keep on getting better.”

Grayslake Central 44, Lakes 37 (OT): Maura Fitzgerald sank 5 of 6 free throws in overtime, finishing with a game-high 13 points, and the host Rams prevailed in overtime in Northern Lake County Conference action.

The game was tied 35-35 at the end of regulation.

Kate Bullman had 10 points for Grayslake Central (5-3, 2-0), which outscored the Eagles 9-3 in OT.

Lakes (2-5, 1-1) was led by Kylie Jozwik's 11 points. Mia Edwards had eight for the Eagles.

Wauconda 54, Grayslake North 32: Allie Tylka had 23 points, 9 steals, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, as the host Bulldogs won the Northern Lake County Conference game.

Kiley Szmajda scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double Wauconda (4-1, 1-1). The Bulldogs' other contributors included Mackenzie Arden (8 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals) and Jessie Pakaski (7 rebounds, 5 points).

“We bounced backed well from the last loss (to Grant),” Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis said. “We worked hard in practice to correct the things we did wrong vs. Grant. We started off well, but Grayslake just wouldn't go away. They had a lot of fight in them that gave us some trouble in the second quarter. Although we are young and still struggle with patience within our offense, we did some good things tonight.”

Wauconda had 46 rebounds and 21 steals.

Grayslake North (0-7, 0-2) was led by Savannah Guenther's 14 points.

Grant 52, Round Lake 49: MaCalyn Flores scored 15 points, sinking four 3-pointers, and the host Bulldogs won a close one in Northern Lake County Conference action.

Jazzlyn Linbo and Brooke Karpinske each had 14 points for Grant (4-3, 2-0), which played without four-year varsity starter Ally Mahinay.

Round Lake (4-2, 1-1) got 18 points from Emily Etherington and 12 from Diane Flade.

Antioch 58, North Chicago 25: The host Sequoits earned their first win of the season, as Piper Foote led all scorers with a season-high 13 points, while Faith Miller was right behind her with 12 points and 8 rebounds (6 offensive).

Hailey Webb (5 points, 4 steals) came off the bench for the Sequoits and sparked the offense in the fourth quarter, as Antioch (1-6, 1-1) built a 30-point lead. Skylar DeL'ao also came off the bench with a season-high 8 points.

Warren 29, Mundelein 19: Trenise Powe and Breleigh Gula each scored 8 points, and the visiting Blue Devils won in North Suburban Conference action to snap the Mustangs' three-game winning streak.

Warren improved to 2-5 and 1-1 in the NSC.

Morgan Frank had 12 points and 4 rebounds for Mundelein (4-4, 1-1), which trailed 19-7 at halftime and 21-13 after three quarters.

Libertyville 52, Zion-Benton 49: Margaret Buchert scored 15 points, Maddie Spaulding added 12, and the visiting Wildcats won the North Suburban Conference game.

Lydia Crow scored 9 points for Libertyville (5-2, 2-0), which handed the Zee-Bees (5-1, 1-1) their first loss of the season.

“We managed to hold on against a furious Zion run in the fourth quarter,” Wildcats coach Greg Pedersen said. “We are happy to gut out this win.”

Lake Zurich 53, Waukegan 29: Alayna Soukup scored 11 points, Ella Gilbertson had nine, and the visiting Bears won handily in North Suburban Conference action.

Margueret Spear and Anna Biergans added 9 and 8 points, respectively, for Lake Zurich (5-2, 1-1). Maddy Piggott had 5 points, and Erin Stewart and Elyssa Adams each had their first varsity baskets.

Mundelein 62, Resurrection 42: On Thursday night, Kendall Klatt had a career-high 29 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals for the host Mustangs.

Morgan Frank added 16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks for Mundelein.
