Stevenson's pressure too much for Warren

A relentless press and red-hot 3-point shooting made for the perfect combination for Stevenson on Tuesday night at Warren.

The Patriots poured on the full-court pressure and forced one Warren turnover after another in rolling to a 58-32 North Suburban Conference victory.

Stevenson (6-0, 1-0 NSC) was up 24-6 by the end of the first quarter and 39-12 at halftime.

"We just play to our strengths," Stevenson coach Ashley Graham said. "We let it fly on the offensive end and then on the defensive end, we apply pressure. We practice that all the time, practicing high hands and a lot of energy.

"It's an exciting style and the kids have bought into it.

Stevenson, which is starting two sophomores and a freshman, got a game-high 22 points out of junior Avery King.

Nikki Ware added 12 points and Simone Sawyer finished with 10 points for the Patriots.

"Avery is a great player. She was up since her freshman year and a lot of people don't know that she was our second-leading scorer last year on a senior-dominated team. But she held her own and she has just grown and matured since then," Graham said. "She puts a lot of time in and her confidence has really come along and it was good to see her shoot the ball like that tonight."

Senior forward Dana Lundtveit led Warren (1-5, 0-1 NSC) with 9 points.

Grant 63, Wauconda 59: Grant senior guard Brooke Karpinske poured in a career-high 32 points to lead Grant to the Northern Lake County Conference win.

Karpinske drained four 3-pointers.

Allie Tylka scored 24 points to lead four Wauconda players in double-figures.

Kiley Szmajda had a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) for Wauconda.

"It's certainly not the way we wanted to open conference play," Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis said. "We were extremely sloppy with the ball and soft on defense. Not a good combination. We played a good fourth quarter but it's tough to win ballgames when you only execute the game plan for one quarter. We had nice point distribution but needed a better defensive game from the team.

Round Lake 47, Antioch 42: Round Lake came from behind in the fourth quarter to get the win.

Gisella Raygoza scored all 12 of her points in the fourth-quarter rally.

Diane Flade added 10 points for the Panthers.

Erin Miller topped Antioch with 15 points.
