Stevenson's Sawyer scores 22 in win

Freshman guard Simone Sawyer led all scorers with 22 points, and Stevenson's girls basketball team beat Plainfield Central 61-53 Friday night to move to 2-0 in the Willowbrook Thanksgiving tournament.

Avery King (16 points), Nikki Ware (11) and Lydia Lueck (10) also scored in double figures for the Patriots. Sawyer sank a pair of 3-pointers.

Stevenson resumes the tournament Monday with a 6 p.m. game against West Chicago.

Wauconda 60, Belvidere 34: At Wauconda, Allie Tylka had 23 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 steals, as the Bulldogs improved to 2-0 in their own tournament.

Ella Karg added 15 points and 8 assists for Wauconda, and Kiley Szmajda had 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs also got 7 points from Mackenzie Arden and 10 rebounds from Jessie Pakaski.

"It was a great team win with a lot of key contributions from many different people," Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis said. "It was a close game in the first half. ... We changed our defense at half and it made a huge difference."

Up 32-26 at halftime, Wauconda outscored Belvidere 17-2 in the third quarter.

"Allie (Tylka) had a huge second (half) after sitting with foul trouble in the second quarter," Dennis said. "And Smzajda picked up her first double-double of the season. We are doing a lot of good things, but we still have a lot of work to do."

Glenbrook South 60, Grant 36: At Mundelein, the Titans remained undefeated in the tournament, jumping out to a 14-0 lead and never looking back.

Annie Streb scored a game-high 17 points to lead Glenbrook South (4-0, 4-0), which led 16-7 after one quarter, 31-16 at halftime and 49-29 after three.

Libby Vanderveen added 10 points for the Titans, and Julia DiSano had nine.

Brooke Karpinske led Grant (2-2, 2-2) with 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Jazzlyn Linbo had 8 points for the Bulldogs, who wrap up the tourney with a noon tipoff Saturday against Carmel.

Glenbrook South plays Grayslake North (0-4, 0-4) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Highland Park 48, Grayslake North 43: At Mundelein, Sydney Ignoffo scored 11 of her game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Giants in fourth-round action of the tournament.

Grayslake North (0-4, 0-4) took a 43-42 lead with 2:54 left in the fourth on Jordyn Gerdes' second 3-pointer of the quarter and fourth of the game. But Highland Park 6-foot-2 junior forward Addie Budnik answered with a short jumper and 2 free throws, and the Giants didn't allow another basket the rest of the way.

Budnik finished with 12 points, and Maddie Abrams had 11 for Highland Park (2-2, 2-2), which plays its final game of the tourney at 3 p.m. Saturday against host Mundelein.

Gerdes and Savannah Guenther each scored 12 points for Grayslake North, which finishes against Glenbrook South at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Stevenson 49, Lockport 38: At Willowbrook on Thursday night, the Patriots opened their season with a victory in tournament action.

Junior guard Avery King and freshman guard Simone Sawyer scored 13 points each to lead Stevenson. Junior guard Lydia Lueck added 10 points, and senior guard Krissy Hill had eight. Sawyer and Lueck each hit two 3-pointers.
