Karpinske leads Grant past Grayslake North

Brooke Karpinske scored 22 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, and Grant pulled away in the second half to defeat Grayslake North 58-40 in first-round action of the Mundelein Thanksgiving girls basketball tournament Monday night.

Grayslake North senior forward Savannah Guenther led all scorers with 23 points and added 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks.

Karpinske, a senior forward, sank 7 of 9 shots, including 4 of 4 from three-point range. Jazzlyn Linbo added 7 points and 9 rebounds for Grant, and freshman guard MaCalyn Flores came off the bench to score 7 points, including a 3-pointer.

Grant led 13-4 after one quarter before seeing Grayslake North get within 25-22 at halftime thanks to Guenther's 9 points. Karpinske's third 3 of the game helped the Bulldogs extend their lead to 39-29 after three.

Grant four-year varsity guard Ally Mahinay, who was in foul trouble most of the night, scored all 6 of her points in the final quarter.

Grant (1-0) plays Highland Park (0-1) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, while Grayslake North plays Mundelein at 6 p.m.

Glenbrook South 62, Mundelein 32: At Mundelein, in the first game of the night, senior guard Libby Vanderveen scored a game-high 15 points and added 10 steals (all in the first half), as the Titans cruised.

Glenbrook South all received double-digit points from Kristin Ralston (12) and Makayla Stadler (10). The Titans jumped out to a 7-0 lead, helped force 17 turnovers in the opening quarter and took an 11-5 in the second. Glenbrook South then outscored the Mustangs 24-8 to lead 35-13 at halftime.

Mundelein, which committed 44 turnovers, was led by returning juniors Morgan Frank (10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks) and Kendall Klatt (9 points, 10 rebounds. Mustangs sophomore center Gerda Boreika grabbed 9 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.

Glenbrook South (1-0) plays Carmel (1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, after Mundelein (0-1) takes on Grayslake North (0-1) at 6 p.m.

Carmel 51, Highland Park 37: At Mundelein, the Brigit Barr had 11 points, Caitlin Teehan added 10, and the Corsairs poured in 24 points in the first quarter en route to a season-opening victory.

Carmel led 24-15 after one quarter and 37-19 at the half. Barr suffered a bloody mouth in the third quarter and did not return.

Carmel 6-foot-2 freshman Grace Sullivan (6 points) beat the third-quarter buzzer with a short shot to extend the Corsairs' lead to 45-30. Shai Horton chipped in 9 points for Carmel.

Sophomore Emma Berg (8 points) sank two 3-pointers for Carmel (1-0), which plays Glenbrook South (1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Highland Park (0-1), which received a game-high 13 points from Addie Budnik and 10 from Halle Abrams, faces Grant (1-0) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
