Boys soccer: Lake Park takes home fourth-place trophy

Lake Park rallied to force a shootout against Collinsville after tying 2-2 in regulation during the Class 3A third place game on Saturday, but fell in penalty kicks 5-4 to bring the fourth-place trophy back to Roselle.

"I guess our luck ran out because we have been flying on all cylinders when it comes to (penalty kicks)," Lancers coach Sean Crosby said. "But I couldn't be more happy with this experience. From top to bottom this group has so much talent and heart and belief in themselves that we knew they could accomplish high things, but even getting to state was a surprise and quite a way to cap a career for a lot of seniors."

Lake Park (21-5-3) shrugged off the pains of Friday's tough loss to state champion Naperville North and got off to a poor start against the Kahoks, surrendering a goal to Trey Przybysz just 24 seconds into the action.

The Lancers then gave up another one midway through the first half to fall behind 2-0, but they cut their deficit in half when Anthony Magner scored with just 6:59 left before half.

It was not only a huge goal for the Lancers but also for the sophomore; it was his first goal.

"It felt really good because it's my first season on varsity and I put in a lot of hard work to get a goal in a big game like this," he said. "Things started going better for us after that."

Matteo Costa drew the Lancers even when he scored just 2:40 into the second half and it remained that way before being decided in the PK shootout.

The Lancers matched the fourth-place finish they had in 2013.

"Being a captain, with all the hard work, I'm very proud of our team from the practices to the regular-season games to conference," Costa said. "I think we really proved as a team that we're strong and able to take on anybody in conference and in the state and I think we proved that throughout the playoffs."
