Boys golf: Tighe, Jacobs shine at Randall Oaks
With his college choice already settled, Jacobs senior Garrett Tighe can enjoy his final season as a high school golfer.
Tighe, who will take his skills to the University of Iowa next season, carded a 3-under 68 to take top individual honors at Tuesday's Dundee-Crown Class 3A regional held at Randall Oaks Golf Course in Dundee.
Tighe's effort propelled Jacobs to the team title with a score of 308. McHenry was second 1 stroke back. The third team to qualify for Monday's Palatine sectional at Palatine Hills was Huntley with a team total of 311.
Tighe produced birdies on holes 3, 6 and 7.
"Myself and my team were all disappointed with the way we played at the conference (Fox Valley) meet last week," said Tighe. "We played horrible. We were all focused today and had a fresh attitude going into today. All parts of my game overall were good today."
Tighe got plenty of help from his teammates as the Golden Eagles grabbed the regional team title.
Kyle Schutt followed Tighe with a 76 while Ryan Frantik and Jordan Stone carded 82s.
Huntley was paced by freshman Josh Good and Garrett Heinke who both shot 3-over-par 74s. Other Red Raiders who contributed to the scoring were Jack Wagner (79) and Trevor Book and Jacob Burnquist who collected 84s.
"I was really with the way team played today," said Huntley coach Collin Kalamaitis. "We were second at the conference meet (FVC) behind a very good South (Crystal Lake) team. We were encouraged by the way we played at the conference meet. Josh and Garrett really played well. Josh, who is a member at Randall Oaks, played with a lot of poise for a freshman. He is mature and a competitor and has a killer instinct. Garrett was really consistent and putted well. He was awesome."
Finishing behind Huntley were Crystal Lake Central (314), Cary-Grove (315), Hampshire (319), Dundee-Crown (323), Woodstock North (348) and Larkin (466).
Also making the trip to Palatine Monday for the sectionals were the Top 10 individuals not on the qualifying 3 teams. They included Crystal Lake Central freshman Eric Klutke, who was third overall with an even par 71.
Hampshire's Mark Spitzer shot a 1-over-par 72 with 3 birdies.
"I am very excited to make it to the sectional," said Spitzer. "My wedge play was very good."
Qualifying from Dundee-Crown was sophomore Jake Zirlin who carded a 3-over 74.
"It really helped my confidence that I am a member here at Randall Oaks and know the course very well," said Zirlin. "I was really excited and not nervous."
Other individual qualifiers were Cole Seeger (Cary-Grove, 76), Craig Bracke (Hampshire, 77), Bayden Hubacher (Crystal Lake Central, 77), Matt McQuillen (Dundee-Crown, 77), Evan Bridges (Woodstock North, 78); Alex Matsas (Dundee-Crown, 78) and Patrick Tobin (Cary-Grove, 78).
Larkin's best effort came from Jacob Ramos who finished his 18 holes with a 93.
