Boys golf: Steady Troy sets tone for Waubonsie Valley's DVC title

Waubonsie Valley junior golfer Will Troy described his round Tuesday as "boring."

Boring worked out just fine, resulting in a medalist performance at the DuPage Valley Conference tournament and a team championship to boot.

Troy shot a 74 and the Warriors' four counting scores added up to a 310 at Links of Carillon in Plainfield. Neuqua Valley took second at 315, Metea Valley scored a 322, Naperville North was fourth at 326, Naperville Central fifth at 332.

"I kind of blew it all over the place on the front nine," Troy said. "I started hitting it better on the back nine off the tee. I couldn't get a putt to fall, and I managed to make seven pars on the back and two bogeys.

"It was kind of just a boring round. Just not a lot of birdies. Just a lot of pars, a couple of bogeys, a couple of birdies. Just not a lot happened."

Troy started the back nine with a bogey on the 10th hole, then par on 11, birdie on 12 and a string of pars thereafter. He 3-putted on the 18th hole, "which was kind of silly."

Troy got support from his teammates. Senior Jacob Fritz shot a 78, senior Carter Wright shot a 79 and freshman Kenton Esch also shot a 79, giving the Warriors a clean sweep of the DVC season and good momentum going into next week's Class 3A West Aurora regional at Blackberry Oaks.

It was the Warriors' first DVC championship since 2013, making it the bigger deal to Troy.

"It was a great win for us," Waubonsie Valley coach Eric Flodberg said. "The boys played well. Tough conditions out there today with the wind and everything else. There was a lot of out of bounds, a lot of water. Fortunately enough we were able to have four guys able to navigate through the course. They did a nice job."

Scott Boyajian of Metea Valley finished second with a 75. Neuqua Valley's Colin Chromy and Naperville Central's Tyler Schettek each carded a 76.
